An After-School Music Program
Nutrition for the Mind and Soul
Music for Life is a nonprofit organization that operates an after school music and mentoring program for at-risk and underserved populations who otherwise cannot afford the opportunity. We serve the metropolitan DC area which includes Washington DC and the neighboring counties in Virginia and Maryland.
Our name is a reminder of why we began this journey; we wanted something positive to come from the tragic shooting death of Aaron Brown; our 18 year old neighbor, an Eagle Scout and promising professional guitar player who was studying music at Northern Virginia Community College. Music played a major role in Aaron’s life; he believed in its ability to strengthen the mind as well as help people cope with their challenges. His dream was that everyone have the opportunity to benefit from the gift of music.
We began providing services in Northern Virginia in 2006; in 2009 we expanded into Washington DC and Maryland. During our early days we educated ourselves on the business of being a nonprofit; we listened to what our students and volunteers were saying about the program; we sought the advice of professional music educators and experienced nonprofit managers. They agreed with the value of a community based after-school music program; they advised us on the curriculum and organization we needed to achieve the desired results. We are continually upgrading our curriculum and strengthening our organization. The music program we operate today is very different from the model with which we began; today our program is widely recognized as one that does achieve the desired results.
