Our Programs Are Free To Qualifying Students
Music for Life only operates in the metropolitan Washington DC area: Northern Virginia, DC, and the two neighboring counties in Maryland.
Eligibility for our After-School Guitar, Band & Orchestra, and STEAM Guitar Programs:
- Student attends middle or high school
- Student qualifies for Free or Reduced Lunch
To apply, email us at info@musicforlife.org with your child’s age, school, and instrument. We will respond with information regarding a class near you. If one is available, submit an application.
Eligibility for our Ukulele and Piano Programs:
- Student attends a Title I Elementary School
To apply, email us at info@musicforlife.org with your child’s school. We will respond with information regarding whether that school offers our program.

Join Our Team

Program Administrator
In-Person
Volunteer to oversee group guitar classes; prepare the facility, ensure teachers and students are present/ equipped, handle issues, and coordinate communication. Parent volunteers may enroll their child in lessons they operate.

Guitar Teacher
In-Person
Volunteer to teach beginner and/or intermediate guitar lessons. Must be proficient in playing guitar, reading music, and basic music theory. Teach a weekly class throughout the school year and/or serve as a substitute if weekly teaching isn’t feasible.

Band & Orchestra Teacher
In-Person
Compensated or volunteer to teach lessons on any band or orchestra instrument; professional teaching experience required. May operate in schools during regular hours or after school. Teach weekly individual lessons to 2 or more students throughout the school year.

STEAM Guitar Teacher
In-Person
Compensated or volunteer to lead students in building their own guitar from a kit; cigar box in middle school, electric in high school. Requires familiarity with woodworking and guitars; additional training available. Operates in schools during regular hours. 2-3 classes per week; 6-8 weeks for middle school, 12-16 weeks for high school.

Fundraising
Remote & In-Person
Volunteer to support any of our fundraising initiatives: develop and support new campaigns, identify new funding opportunities, or assist in applying to potential new grantors.

Marketing
Remote & In-Person
Volunteer to support building relationships with local businesses and service/civic organizations that may provide volunteers, grants/sponsorships, or in-kind support.

Recruiting
Remote & In-Person
Volunteer to identify potential teachers for our programs; connecting with school music departments, attending recruitment events, and helping staff our booth at festivals.

Social Media
Remote & In-Person
Volunteer to routinely post content on our social media channels, coordinate responses to inquiries, and share updates to help grow awareness and support for programs.

Share the gift of learning music with at-promise youth in your community by donating instruments and sound equipment no longer needed. Items must be in reasonable working order; portable keyboards okay but no pianos. Contact us to arrange a pickup.

Am I eligible to be a student with Music for Life?
Before submitting an application, please email us at info@musicforlife.org to see if your child is eligible.
We only offer our 5 music programs to at-promise K-12 students in our service area (the metropolitan DC area):
- Students eligible for our After-School Guitar, STEAM Guitar, and Band & Orchestra Programs must: 1) attend middle or high school, and 2) qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch.
- Students eligible for our Ukulele and Piano Programs must attend a Title I Elementary School.
Where does Music for Life operate / what is your service area?
Music for Life only operates in the metropolitan Washington DC area:
- Northern Virginia (Alexandria, Arlington County, Falls Church, Fairfax County, Loudon County, Manassas, Prince William County),
- DC (District of Columbia Public Schools),
- and the two neighboring counties in Maryland (Montgomery County and Prince George’s County).
Do you offer paid lessons?
No, we do not offer paid lessons. We are a non-profit that provides free music education programming only to at-promise youth.
In what ways can I donate to Music for Life?
Network for Good is our primary donation platform, and we also support donations through PayPal and Crypto.
